Viidumäe Nature Reserve

The Viidumäe Nature Reserve is located in the highest and oldest part of Saaremaa Island. Greater part of Saaremaa can be caught into the sight from the watching tower installed near the visiting centre of the nature reserve. The biota of the area is extremely diverse. Over 660 vascular plant species have been found here. Forests take up the majority of the area. The ancient coastal escarpment splits the area into two parts. Below the escarpment there are many spring fens, the communities that are particularly recognized by people interested in plant life. Even some relict species from different post-glacial climatic stages can be seen. In spring fens the endemic species Rhinanthus osiliensis and Alpine butterwort grow. Numerous wooded meadows contribute to the richness of the fauna of Viidumäe.
