Jägala Waterfall
The Jägala waterfall is the highest (8 m) natural waterfall in Estonia. The catchment area of the Jagala River consists mainly of forests and mires, reassuring sufficient flow rate in the river even during the low-water period in summer. The falling water has eroded the soft sandstones lying under the harder limestones and shaped a salient cliff wall. Consequently, the courageous travellers may try to pass the waterfall from behind. This is not recommended, however, due to the risk of potential fall-down of the rock wall. Such failures occur from time to time resulting in constant retreat of the waterfall about 3 cm per year. The canyon-like river valley of several hundreds of metres with raging rapids confirms the retreat process.
